ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is the best known discipline of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its practice has been professionally recognized in Quebec since 1985 and is regulated by the Quebec Order of Acupuncturists since 1995.

Acupuncture involves the stimulation of precise points on the body or the ear. Many of these points are located along meridians, a complex system which, according to modern science, could correspond in function to the nervous system, which transmits information to the body. Acupuncture employs a range of techniques and tools, including needles, moxibustion (heat), seeds, electricity and lasers.

Modern science has also developed theories that partly explain how acupuncture works. One theory is that acupuncture points on the human body have unique physical and electrical properties which, when stimulated, induce a change in heart rate, blood pressure, blood chemistry, brain activity, endocrine functions, intestinal activity or the immune system.

Evidence of acupuncture's efficacy in the treatment of pain is well documented: among other functions, acupuncture stimulates certain points which allow the release of endorphins in the brain.

An initial consultation for acupuncture lasts about an hour. The acupuncturist establishes an energy diagnosis based on a detailed interview with the patient, pulse measurement and tongue observation.

The number of treatments required varies depending on the problem addressed. A course of treatment normally consists of three to ten sessions, and improvement is usually noticed from the first visits on.

Only pre-sterilized single-use needles are used in treatment. There is little or no pain when needles are inserted and patients typically feel a sense of deep relaxation during and after the sessions. Some people feel tired or very energetic after the sessions and their condition may appear to worsen before improving. This is normal and simply means that energy reactions are happening.

When you consult an acupuncturist make sure they have the right to practice acupuncture in Quebec. The use of single-use disposable needles is mandatory.

Insurance covers a portion of acupuncture treatments. Please check with your insurer for more information.
